just a little something for y'all to think about Jan. 23rd, 2004 @ 06:08 pm
In society, patriarchy is viewed as a system that depicts the unequal balance of power between men and women. On the surface it would seem that men dominate women because they can. Johnson, however, refutes this point by introducing the principles of fear and control. Men are not concerned with impressing women and convincing them that they are the superior gender; rather, men are worried about how they are viewed by their fellow guys. Women have been trying for years to fight the oppression under which they are held by the male race, only to no great avail. Due to this enormous gap in gender power, men have been able to brush women off to the side in the line of immediate threats to their masculinity. That leaves all of the other XY chromosomal pairs to worry about.

Being in control provides men with a sense of security, and they make it a point to live their lives so that this feeling of safety can be preserved at all times. If men were to appear to not be in control of their lives, other men could view them as weak and less masculine. Of course, this is the last way men want to appear, and so they must give off this appearance of being in control at all times.

The idea of fear goes hand in hand with this need to be in control. Fear comes into play in a patriarchal society because men become afraid of what other men will do to them, should they fall under their control. Under the control of another male, some men could be deprived of things that they were so used to having when it was them, on their own, controlling rather than being controlled. Johnson stated that patriarchy is run by men’s decisions and reactions to the society of which they are apart. This means that if men are in constant fear of being controlled, that will be their incentive to stay on top of their game and appear to be in control of their own lives. It appears that patriarchy will continue to rule our society as long as men truly believe in the “dog eats dog” philosophy that is the cycle of fear and control.

Yeah. I wrote that. Men and Women in Society rocks my world!

"you're suppossed to be a retriever!" Jan. 6th, 2004 @ 06:51 pm
Last day in Oak Harbor, and we're practically snowed in. It better clear up by tomorrow so I can go to the airport.

I am completely intrigued by this new book, The Corrections. It's amazing. I read about 60 pages in my insomniatic spell last night before I passed out listening to Britney Spears' "In the Zone"

BACK IN RALEIGH TOMORROW!!

Low Carbs My Ass Jan. 5th, 2004 @ 02:07 am
Alright, so I didn't get to the gym or the mall yesterday. I did, however, get the opportunity to sit in my parents' jacuzzi bathtub in my awesomely cool bathing suit and drink Skyy Blues.

Damn I'm cool.

Did make it to the mall today though, and made a great purchase of an adorable pleated wool skirt today at American Eagle. Also began on my school photo album. It's amazing. Still in the process of getting all my rolls reprinted so that the album may be complete.

Less than a week to go. I already started packing.

**In reference to the subject of this journal: I just finished watching this special on low carbs diets on the Food Channel with my mom. And after this show, what do I think? I think that these people need to get over their obsession with cutting every remotely decent food out of their diets (i.e. pasta, rice, anything that comes with Chinese or Japanese food, my faves), and get off their asses and GO TO THE GYM. All I think these South Beach, Atkins, etc. diets do is reinforce the laziness that is already plaguing our society, which is why 60% of the population is overweight in the first place. Not once during that whole hour segment did I hear any of these diet experts or people who lost weight mention the important of exercise. I don't see what the point to rearranging your whole life is; just eat better and a little less and get on the fucking treadmill once in a while and things will be peachy keen. These diets merely reinforce bad habits (i.e. digusting amounts of laziness), and that's sick.

Sorry. Tangent. It happens.

Snow in Oak Harbor? That's unheard of! Jan. 3rd, 2004 @ 03:20 pm
Truly. I guess it really doesn't snow that much in Oak Harbor. Seeing as I'm not a native and really only live here about 3 weeks out of the year, whatever they tell me about the intergalactic weather conditions here I'll believe. But nonetheless, it's snow, it's pretty, and I like it. Can't wait till it snows at school...o what fun that white precipitation from the sky will bring.

Pissed about the Yellowcard performance last night. Stayed up an extra 2 hours to watch the performance. They played "Way Away" which I really like, but I was planning on hearing "Ocean Avenue", my college life embodied in a song lol. So the song ended with me midly disappointed. But after they came back from commercial, to my delight, they began to play "Ocean Avenue", only to have it cut off!! Stupid ABC, not letting me hear my song....at least my parents recognized that I went to sleep really late last night as a result of this viewing and let me sleep in this morning.

Plans for the day: Mall to use gift cards. Then gym. Then nothing, maybe (probably) reading more in The Corrections. Then feasting on the coctail shrimp that my mom is making for my dad while we watches football.

Last thing before I head to the shower: if anyone wants to go with me to see Les Miserables in Raleigh on February 10th let me know cause I don't wanna go bymyself. It's the theater y'all, you know you'd have fun!!!

Alright, I've given this livejournal thing a try on two separate occassions, and since it's just after midnight and I've got nothing better to do except for sit on my computer, download classic broadway hits, and wait for the Yellowcard performance on the Jimmy Kimmel show which probably won't be on for at least another 45 minutes, I thought to myself, maybe third time is the charm. We'll see how long this blog attempt lasts.

So I've been in Washington since Decemeber 17th, left the day after my first set of college finals ended. Did fairly well, made the dean's list and accumulated enough credits to become a sophomore. Not too shabby. Packed on 18 credits for next semester...we'll see how that goes. My mom told me that, and I quote, "If you're social life starts to suffer, make sure you drop one of those classes". Don't worry. No quams with that one. If Economics interferes with my Gold/Welch events, something is going to have to go, and I'll tell you right now it's not going to be the alcohol.

The holidays treated me well; ended up with a bunch of nice gifts and a very technophilic kodak digital camera. Yay...just enough to satisfy my never ending hunger for group pictures. Also, received the book "The Corrections" from my Dad, which he claims is one of the best books he's read in a long time. Should be a good read (and it better be if I'm investing the time to read a 539ish page novel for the pure purpose of exposing myself to great literature, not because I have to for school).

Spent New Year's Eve in Seattle at the Space Needle with my dad which was a lot of fun. Good to get off this simple life island and into the city for a bit. Enjoyed the drunken phone calls I received, along with the sober ones. Happy 2004 (yay!).

Leave to head back to Raleigh on Wednesday. Move back in to Welch 209 on Sunday. Classes start Monday. So much to look foward to.
